Major Requirements

Anthropology majors are required to complete 33 credits in anthropology, distributed as follows:

Introductory Courses (9 credits)

ANTH 0582: Introduction to Archaeology
ANTH 0680: Introduction to Biological Anthropology 
ANTH 0780: Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
Note: Students must complete two of the three introductory courses with a grade of C or better prior to declaring the major.

Core Courses (9 credits)

One Methods course
One Undergraduate Seminar course
One Writing-intensive course (also counts for an upper-level elective)
Note: Please consult with an Anthropology Advisor each semester for a list of courses that fulfill these requirements.

Upper-level Electives (12 credits)

Three 1000-level ANTH elective courses
The Writing-intensive core course "double counts" as the fourth upper-level elective

Additional Electives (6 credits)

Two 100 or 1000-level ANTH elective courses
Note: No more than three credits of internship, independent study, or directed readings (ANTH 19xx courses) can count as electives for the major. 

Additional Information:

  • A maximum of six credits in University External Studies Programs (UESP) courses can count toward the required 33 credits, but UESP courses cannot be used for required introductory and core courses.
  • A minimum major GPA of 2.00 is required for graduation.
  • No course that counts toward the major may be taken on an S/NC basis.
