Investigating the Emergence of Prehispanic Complex Societies in the Llanos of Casanare, Colombia

The earliest complex societies in the South American lowlands followed diverse pathways of development leading to highly varied forms of organization. Archaeological evidence from the Llanos of Casanare documents the conditions under which complex social organization emerged there, and makes it possible to investigate the strategies available to the leaders of prehispanic Casanare communities and to trace the impact of their choices on the development of social complexity in the region.
